Bedeković Villa

Bedeković Villa

Dr Wilhelm Müller, a physician from Varaždin who built a town park-a promenade in the area where there used to be a southern moat, built a residential villa as his home. In 1874, it was rebuilt as a Classicist style villa by Ban Koloman Bedeković.

Dr Wilhelm Bernhard Müller was born in Germany in 1785 and he arrived in Varaždin in 1820.  He worked as a town physician for 40 years. He lived a very socially active life and besides building the promenade, he initiated the pavement of downtown streets and he started the building of a sewage system. He also introduced oil lamp street lighting and planting tree alleys. Dr Müller lived opposite the present-day promenade in Cesarčeva Street. He opened a public bath in his house and he had a chicory factory in a nearby Anina Street. He died in Varaždin on 27th March 1863.  Grateful citizens erected a monument in the middle of the Promenade in honour of the Park`s founder, dr Müller. The monument is made of stone boulders which were sculptured by Mila Vud.
